365-international

365-INTERNATIONAL IS AN INTERNATIONAL PHOTO PROJECT. THE IDEA IS QUITE SIMPLE: FOR ONE YEAR PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT COUNTRIES TAKE ONE PHOTO EACH DAY AND ADD THE FRONT PAGE HEADLINE OF THE NEWSPAPER OF THEIR CHOICE AS A TITLE. THE PROJECT ITSELF IS NOT POLITICAL, THOUGH IT CERTAINLY ALLOWS FOR A POLITICAL INTERPRETATION.

FAQs

Is it really just a photo and a news paper headline?
It is indeed only a photo and the newspaper headline. The interesting thing about this combination is that the personal aspect of our photos and the headline with international or local news creates something new. Because sometimes the spectator remembers the context of the headline from his own past and sometimes the headlines even seem to match the photo and therefore allows him a connection and interpretation.

Do photos and headline have to correspond?
No. They are two different things. So don´t try to do a photo according to the headline. The photo documents what you considered relevant that day, the headline shows what the paper considered relevant for you that day.

What kind of photos should I take?
Simply take photos from your every day life, of everything you think is worth remembering and sharing. There are no limitations: friends, things, architecture, landscape everything. You are the one to decide. It simply should reflect your life and personal view. There will be days when you´ll have several photos from one day so that it is difficult to chose the “best”. On other days there will be nothing remarkable at all and end up taking a photo of your vacuum cleaner. That too is part of the project.

What headline from the paper do I take?
It has to be the bigest headline on the front page. Exactly this “coincedende” is wanted. With the foto you show each day, what was important or remarcable for you. The headline shows, what the news paper thinks is remarkable for the world or the people in your country. If you bring both perspectives together, it creates something new.

What headline should be used?
Pick a newspaper with daily issues and use the title headline of it as photo title, combined with the date and your native country. Stick to the same newspaper during the entire 365 days. If there is more than one person from your nation, contact each other and decide who will take what newspaper.

What exactly should the headline contain we post the photo?
1. The English translation of your headline of the day you took the photo, date (dd.mm.yyy)
2. The headline of the day you took the photo in the original language, the country you live in (most of the 365 days), your first name
What tags shall we use?
On tumblr you are able to tag the photos (when you upload or edit it, there is a field on the right side).
Please add: 365, the date (dd.mm.yyy), your first name and your country as tags

Do I have to upload the photo the day I take it?
Try to do it. But certainly there are times when we don´t have the chance to do the upload. For example when you are on holiday. Check if there are Apps available for your smartphone. That way you can do the upload directly from your phone. In that´s is not possible, do the upload when you come back or. But make sure that you get the correct headline of each day.

What is the best way to get the daily headline?
Here is a link to a side with images of many news papers from various continent and countries. Check if yours is one of them because it makes it much easier to get hold of it: http://kiosko.net/
If that should not help either while you are away, ask a friend or a relative at home to write down the headlines of each day.

What if I forget to take a photo on one day?
From my last project I know that it isn´t easy to complete those 365 days for several reasons. There were approx. 10 days I didn´t cover because I forgot to take one or because I lost the data. But when I was done after a year I was kind of sorry that it was over and proud of what I had accomplished. I carried around a small digital camera with me that fitted in every jacket. Meanwhile I think the quality of most mobile phone cameras is good enough for our purpose and we hardly ever forget our phone, do we? :-)

What if I am unsure about the correct translation?
Certain frases are simply untranslatable but check with a native English speaker here on the 365 cs group if you need help.
